This half of the sea mixes walled Adriatic towns with the Greek islands, Malta and Istanbul. Distances from pier to sights are mostly short, and many of the best options here involve a boat, whether that means island hopping, a caldera cruise or a run along the Bosphorus.

Are the Greek islands better seen on a tour or on my own?
Mykonos town is easy to explore independently. Santorini is more spread out, and a tour that handles the tender, the climb from the old port and the drive to Oia saves time.
How crowded are Dubrovnik and Kotor on cruise days?
Both old towns are compact and can feel busy when several ships are in port. Starting early, or heading out of town to the islands, Perast or the Lovćen mountains, is a common way around the crowds.
